A common question that Dr. Raymond Stein of Bochner Eye Institute receives from cataract surgery patients is whether cataracts can “grow back” after surgery. Cataracts cannot, in fact, grow back after surgery. Once they are removed, they are gone for good.
However, in rare cases, patients who have their vision restored with cataract surgery may notice a regression in their eyesight that is similar to what they experienced with cataracts. This decline is due to a condition known as secondary cataracts; and luckily, it is easily treated.
Understanding “Secondary Cataracts”
To understand secondary cataracts, it helps to understand a little bit about the anatomy of the eye and the steps of cataract surgery.
During cataract surgery, the surgeon creates an incision in the eye. The surgeon then creates a circular opening in the membrane, or “capsule,” that holds the lens, to gain access to the lens. This is done very carefully and precisely to preserve the posterior portion of the capsule so it can hold and support the IOL that later replaces the eye’s natural lens.
Occasionally, in the months or even years after cataract surgery, the posterior portion of the lens capsule can become hazy or cloudy. This is called posterior capsular opacification, and it leads to blurry or hazy vision that is similar to the visual effects of cataracts. The condition can also cause a lot of glare from lights.
Treating Secondary Cataracts
Posterior capsular opacification, or “secondary cataracts” can be easily treated with a quick, in-office procedure called a YAG laser capsulotomy.
During the procedure, the cataract surgeon uses a special laser to remove the haziness or cloudiness from the membrane and restore normal vision. The process is fast and painless. Usually it does not need to be repeated.
